During couples therapy, couples share their concerns, feelings and observations of their relationship patterns within a safe and structured environment that benefits from the guidance of a therapist who has specialised training in relationship dynamics. The therapist helps the couple identify and address issues that are causing a strain on the couples relationship. These issues could be coming from the way in which the couple interacts with one another or from external stressors that are ultimately impacting the relationship. During these therapy sessions couples are deeply encouraged to open up about what is working and what is not working in their relationships and then work with one another and the therapist to develop couple-specific solutions that will strengthen the couples bond.
Couples therapy can be applied to a range of relationship issues, from premarital counseling to navigating major life transitions, like having a child, the death of an elderly parent or job loss. This form of therapy provides a neutral space for couples to investigate their dynamics, understand each other's point of view,, and develop the skills and tools needed to build a more resilient and fulfilling partnership. Ultimately, successful couples therapy establishes improved communication, increased intimacy, and a more harmonious relationship between partners.
