During CBT sessions, both the therapist and the client collaborate to pick thoughts and beliefs that are causing the client emotional distress. Once the thought is identified then the therapist guides the client through the process of reframing the negative thinking patterns and then replacing those negative thinking patterns with more realistic and positive thoughts and beliefs. CBT is intended to be a short-term and focused therapeutic intervention, where clients are active participants in their own therapeutic process.
CBT has a homework component to it, wherein the client is encouraged to engage in activities that will promote positive outcomes. As a part of CBT, clients will also learn practical coping strategies to help them manage stress, challenges as well as specific problems.
CBT, like EMDR, is a structured and goal-oriented form of therapy and as such, CBT is effective in addressing a wide range of mental health issues such as anxiety disorders, depression, and phobias, amongst others.
